Transfer wrap: Adebayor to Spurs, Barton nears exit

Tottenham Hotspur have signed striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Spurs had been widely linked with a temporary move for the former Togo international, who was not in the first-team plans of City manager Roberto Mancini.

Tottenham confirmed the completion of the loan signing shortly before their Europa playoff second leg at home to Hearts on Thursday, a match watched by Adebayor at White Hart Lane.

We are delighted to announce the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on a season-long loan from Manchester City, a Tottenham statement read.

Adebayor, 27, arrived in the English Premier League with Spurs archrivals Arsenal, who signed the centre-forward from Monaco in January 2006.

He moved to City, then managed by Mark Hughes, in July 2009 for a reported fee of 25 million pounds.

Hughes successor Mancini has since brought in other strikers in the form of Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and now Sergio Aguero.

Adebayor spent the second half of the 2010-11 campaign on loan at La Liga club Real Madrid, for whom he scored twice in a Champions League quarter-final victory over Spurs.

Tottenham allowed striker Robbie Keane to depart for LA Galaxy earlier this month, leaving them with only Roman Pavlyuchenko, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe to choose from in attack.

In other transfer news, midfielder Joey Barton has undergone a second medical with Queens Park Rangers as he nears a transfer to the promoted side from Newcastle United.

Barton, 28, was made available for a free transfer by Newcastle after he used Twitter to repeatedly criticise the club s transfer policy.

Italy midfielder Alberto Aquilani, 27, has completed his move from Liverpool to Serie A champions AC Milan.

A 17-million-pound signing from Roma in August 2009, Aquilani struggled for form and fitness in England and spent last season on loan at Juventus.

Finally, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has denied the club are preparing to sell Florent Malouda after reports suggested the winger was set to make way for the arrival of Alvaro Pereira from Porto.

We can t let ourselves sell talent of this quality, Villas-Boas said, referring to France international Malouda.
